If one radiator stays stubbornly cold while the rest of your heating is working, a stuck thermostatic radiator valve (TRV) pin is a very common culprit. With a bit of care, you can often free the pin yourself and get heat flowing again without damaging your system.

How a TRV works and what usually goes wrong

A TRV is the adjustable head on the side of your radiator with numbers or a temperature scale. Inside the head is a sensor that expands and contracts with temperature, pushing a small pin up and down in the valve body to control how much hot water flows through the radiator.

Over time, especially after the summer when heating has been off, that tiny pin can seize in the closed position due to sludge, limescale or simple lack of movement. The boiler may be working perfectly, but that particular radiator will stay cold because no water is getting through.

Common signs your TRV pin is stuck

You do not need any special tools to spot a stuck TRV. Typical symptoms include:

  • One radiator stone cold while others in the house are hot

  • TRV head turned up high, but the radiator never warms

  • Pipe on the TRV side of the radiator is cool, while nearby radiators are hot

  • Problem starting after the heating has been off for weeks or months

If other radiators work properly and the boiler is running, the TRV on the cold radiator is a good place to start.

Safety steps before you touch the valve

Before you go near any radiator valve, take a couple of minutes to make things safe. This protects you from burns and reduces the chance of leaks if something is already weak or corroded.

First, turn your heating off at the programmer or boiler controls so the system is not trying to circulate hot water while you work. Then let the system cool fully, especially if the pipes were hot recently.

Have an old towel or tray under the radiator valve just in case there is any minor dribble when you start working. You should not be loosening the valve body itself, but it is always worth being prepared.

Step-by-step: freeing a stuck TRV pin

Take your time with each step and use gentle pressure. The aim is to free the pin, not to force it.

1. Remove the TRV head

Most TRV heads are held on by either a plastic collar that you can undo by hand, or a metal nut that needs a small adjustable spanner. Turn the locking ring anticlockwise and carefully lift the head away from the valve body.

Set the head somewhere safe where it will not get kicked or stood on. Underneath, you should see a small metal pin sticking up from the valve.

2. Check if the pin moves

Use your finger to gently press the pin straight down. It should move a couple of millimetres and spring back up smartly when you release it. If it does this, the pin is probably fine and the fault could be elsewhere.

If the pin barely moves, feels gritty, or does not spring back, it is likely stuck in the closed position. This is what stops hot water flowing into the radiator.

3. Free the pin with gentle movement

Start by repeatedly pressing the pin down and letting it pop back up, using light fingertip pressure. Sometimes that alone is enough to free mild sticking. Wipe away any visible dirt or sludge as you go.

If it still feels stiff, you can use controlled tapping. With a small spanner or screwdriver handle, gently tap the side of the valve body near the pin while lightly pressing the pin in and out. The vibration can help break the grip of dried sludge without needing force.

As a next step, you can very carefully grip the top of the pin with a pair of pliers and move it straight up and down. Use tiny movements and support your hand so you do not twist the pin. The idea is to encourage it to travel, not to pull it out.

4. Refit the TRV head and test

Once the pin is moving freely and springing back, refit the TRV head in the same position it came off. Make sure the collar or nut is snug but do not overtighten, especially on plastic fittings.

Turn the TRV up to its highest setting, then switch your heating back on. Give it 15 to 30 minutes and check if the radiator and both pipes are heating evenly. If they are, you have likely solved the issue.

Common mistakes to avoid

TRVs are fairly delicate, and it is easy to turn a simple fix into a bigger job if you get carried away. Avoid these mistakes while working on the valve:

  • Do not yank or pull the pin upwards with force, as it can come out and cause a leak

  • Do not twist the pin from side to side, which can damage internal seals

  • Do not dismantle the valve body from the pipework unless you are competent and ready to drain the system

  • Do not hit the valve hard with tools; light tapping is all that is needed

  • Do not apply heat (for example with a blowtorch or heat gun) to try to free the valve

If you feel you need real force to move the pin, stop and get professional help rather than risk a leak or damaged valve.

When to call a heating engineer instead

Not every stuck radiator is a simple TRV issue. In some situations, calling an engineer is safer and more cost effective than persisting with DIY.

Get professional help if you notice any leaks around the valve, the pin will not move at all even with gentle encouragement, or the lockshield valve on the other side of the radiator is also seized. Older valves on very old systems, or systems with microbore pipework, can be especially fragile.

If you are also experiencing uneven heating throughout the house, noisy pipes, or frequent radiator issues, it can be a sign the system needs balancing, cleaning, or other attention beyond a stuck TRV. An engineer can assess the whole system rather than just the one radiator.

Tips to prevent the pin sticking again

You can reduce the chances of TRVs seizing in future with a bit of routine attention. During the summer, when your heating is off, turn each TRV head fully up and down a few times to keep the internal parts moving.

It also helps to keep your central heating water in good condition. A system with the right corrosion inhibitor level is less likely to build up sludge that gums up valves and pins. Your heating engineer can test and top up inhibitor during a service.
